Reading Support

Phonics

Here at St.Gilbert's, children begin their reading journey within their first few weeks of school. We use  the Read Write Inc. Programme, which is a popular phonics scheme. Like all phonics schemes, it teaches children the sounds in English, the letters that represent them, and how to form the letters when writing.

A parent's guide to this programme is available on the Oxford Owl website. Please use the link below.

https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/reading/reading-schemes-oxford-levels/read-write-inc-phonics-guide/

You will be able to find a selection of useful videos, such as how to pronounce the set 1, 2 and 3 sounds.

Supporting Reading at Home

The Open University -Reading for Pleasure

This website holds a host of ideas for encouraging reading at home.  They use the following three core principles -  'Reading aloud', 'Time to read as a family', and 'Book chats'. They also have lots of useful links to book award winners, digital books and story time ideas.

Reading at Home Archive - Reading for Pleasure (ourfp.org)

This resource comprises three short films and support materials to help parents, families and carers read books conversationally and creatively to children. Working with Macmillan Children’s Books, the films use a selection of their picture books and a poetry collection to support families with reading to different ages of children. To access this resource, please use this link. Book Chat: Reading with your Child - Reading for Pleasure (ourfp.org)

Lexia®Core5®

To help offer the best support for our children, we have implemented the recommeded Lexia®Core5® intervention programme.

Lexia®Core5® is a fun, computer-based programme that is accessible both in school and at home.

The activities in Core5 support and
build on your child’s classroom curriculum and focus on developing reading skills in six areas:
phonological awareness, phonics, structural analysis, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

More information about Lexia®
Core5® can be found on the link below.

https://www.lexialearning.com/core5

Lexia®Core5® is an intervention programme so not all children will need to be given access. If your child is currently on the programme, there is a useful document below, which provides some suggestions for activities at home.

Lexia®Core5® Newsletter

The children love earning a Lexia®Core5® certificate.

We award these as part of our weekly Celebration Worship.

These were the very first two certificates to be earned.
